An incident that began as a routine traffic stop eventually led to a double arrest in Port Charlotte, Florida with charges of grand theft and drug possession.

Just after midnight on the morning of Thursday, June 6th, Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies from the Street Crimes unit stopped a vehicle for missing a tag light in the Harbor Blvd. and Salem Avenue vicinity. A 34 year-old man and 30 year-old woman were in the vehicle. One of the deputies quickly recognized the male as a possible person of interest in a grand theft incident.

Upon searching the vehicle, deputies found Alprazolam in the woman's purse—a drug she did not have a prescription for. She was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. The male was booked with charges of grand theft. In early April, he was reported by a neighbor for stealing a John Deere riding lawnmower, which he later returned. He is being held at the Charlotte County Jail on a $3,500 bond. The woman with him was released after her $3,500 bond was paid.
